The aim of this course is to equip you with the explicit and scientific outlook to language, the subject matter of your teaching profession. It is important that you understand the course material appropriately. This year you are lucky because we have tried to prepare these online materials to make your job easier.

In order to be successful in this course we suggest that you study regularly. Each chapter includes study guidelines. Please try to take these into consideration while you are studying. You do not have to follow them in the suggested order but please try to keep them in mind and try to cover the material as thoroughly as possible. We have prepared a syllabus for you. This syllabus will lead you to a schedule to cover the topics on certain dates. You may also want to make your own schedule for studying. Please try not to fall behind the schedule, and study the topics as suggested in the syllabus, in your textbook, and these online materials. You simply can not learn linguistics unless you are actively involved. That is why we urge you to do the study questions both in your textbook and in your supplementary material. If you want to, find a partner, a classmate and try to answer the questions together. If you prefer to work alone, answer these questions on your own, and then you may want to share your ideas with your friends face-to-face or on the web.

One way of learning linguistics is to look at the language data closely. Do not be surprised by the fact that your textbook and supplementary materials include languages as diverse as Japanese, Swahili, Turkish, and English, among others. The diversity of data represents the subject matter of linguistics: Linguistics investigates all languages. You should solve the problem sets provided in your book in order both to understand and to enjoy linguistics. Your exams might also consist of data from a range of languages. This will give you a broader perspective about how language works.

When you do linguistic problems you look at the data and try to come up with patterns. You must be able to find regularities that operate human language. You must be able to make generalizations about this particular set of data no matter from which language it is taken. If you do all or most of the study questions, think about discussion topics provided in your textbook and if you do the exercises and answer the questions in your supplementary materials, you will be in a pretty good shape. This is the secret of success in this course.
